Eight-month-old boy needs help

Joel Isaac Rosas is a beautiful 8-month-old baby boy who resides in Fallbrook with his parents, Annie and Isaac Rosas, and two brothers, Jonny and Jason. He could certainly use some help from local residents.

Joel was born last September and began experiencing seizures at 6 weeks of age. At 9 weeks, a neurologist at Children’s Hospital diagnosed tuberous sclerosis, an incurable genetic disorder characterized by tuberous growths in the skin, the brain or other vital organs. These growths cause various symptoms, such as seizures in Joel Isaac’s case. He also experiences problems with his eyesight and development.

Children’s Hospital specialists are treating him with medication, attempting to control the seizures. At 8 months, Joel has had four EEGs, an MRI, an echocardiogram, a kidney ultrasound, eye tests for tumors and numerous lab and metabolic tests. He sees a physical therapist and an occupational therapist weekly, a neurologist monthly and an ophthalmologist periodically. With this help, he is able to interact with his family and has learned to hold his head up and roll over. He has been given every possible medication but is still having seizures, although fewer of them. One of these medications is not covered by insurance, nor is the diet the doctors are now recommending. The monthly cost of the carbohydrate-free formula alone is approximately $200 per month. He was having constant underlying seizures and is now having three to four per hour.

Joel’s father, Isaac, is a hardworking man in construction and Annie is a stay-at-home mom. Their high-deductible health insurance is not covering all the medications and treatments that little Joel Isaac requires. Their medical bills are now in the many thousands of dollars and mounting. Here is how you can help this family.

Their church, Emmanuel Baptist, is sponsoring a fundraiser to help with the medical expenses. They will be holding a huge sale with donated items at the church parking lot on Saturday, May 20, from 7 a.m. to noon. All residents of the area are invited to come and purchase something. If you don’t find something, they will accept donations to the fund as well.

Donated items are still welcome for the sale. Garage sale-type items such as tools, dishes, clothes, furniture and more will be gratefully accepted. A pick-up service is offered if you cannot drop them by the church. Please call the church office at (760) 728-2667. Emmanuel Baptist Church is located four blocks east of the Fallbrook Hospital at 911 E. Elder St.
