Last updated 2/3/2011 at Noon

CAMP PENDLETON - Officials at Camp Pendleton today will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new solar power plant that is expected to provide power for about 400 homes on base.

More than 6,000 solar panels are spread across six acres on top of an old landfill in an area called Box Canyon.

The system will produce 1.48 megawatts, or 2,389 megawatt-hours, of electricity.

Construction of the system, one of the largest of its kind in San Diego County, was funded by federal stimulus dollars.
