Frost advisory issued for tonight, chains required for black ice on desert highways

As the region continues to have cold temps, frost, hail, and snow, a frost advisory has been issued for the inland valleys tonight into Monday morning.

A cool air mass and mostly clear skies will result in a cold night again tonight. Temperatures will drop below freezing in the inland valleys tonight into Monday morning for long frost durations.

Riverside County valleys, the Inland Empire, San Diego County valleys, and San Bernardino County valleys are affected and will remain in effect from 9 pm tonight until 9 am Monday morning.

The National Weather Service is warning that the temperatures could dip into the upper 20s to low 30s with isolated mid 20s.

The long durations will be a problem for growers and people who own frost-sensitive plants. Potted plants should be brought indoors if possible.

A frost advisory means that frost is expected and sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.

CHAINS REQUIRED

IDYLLWILD - Chains are required on all vehicles traveling on desert highways today, according to California Highway Patrol. The CHP warned motorists of black ice along highways 74, 243 and 371 through Anza, Banning and Idyllwild.

There have been "numerous'' minor accidents on the highways, but no major injuries, according to the CHP.

It was unknown when the chain requirement will be lifted.
