Fire on Gopher Canyon Road contained to 5 acres; caused by motorhome that caught fire near Interstate 15

BONSALL - A fire that began at approximately 3 p.m. today off of Gopher Canyon Road and Interstate 15 in the Bonsall area has now been fully contained, according to a Cal Fire source.

The fire, which caused residents to leave about a half-dozen homes, was caused by a motor home that caught fire near Interstate 15, authorities said.

The fire appeared to have been caused by a motor home, which caught fire just after 3 p.m. while on Gopher Canyon Road west of Interstate 15, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The blaze spread to the surrounding brush and moved through a citrus grove before threatening about a half-dozen homes. Area residents were evacuated as a precaution, according to Cal Fire spokesman Mike Mohler.

Initially, firefighters in five trucks and two helicopters, along with two air tankers and two hand crews battled the blaze, but additional personnel were brought in to help combat the fire, which was about 40 percent contained just after 5 p.m., Mohler said.

One firefighter sustained a minor burn injury while battling the blaze, Mohler said

The Gopher Canyon Road exit from Interstate 15 was closed while firefighters continued to knock down the fire.

Crews remain on scene to gain full containment and complete mop up.
