Roque, Comerford, Froboese medal at Mt. Carmel Invite

Three Fallbrook High School boys earned medals Sept.15 at the Mount Carmel/Movin’ Shoes Cross-Country Invitational meet at the Morley Field course in San Diego.

Elijah Roque finished 23rd in the Division I sophomore race, Sam Comerford placed 29th among freshman race runners, and Connor Froboese took 35th in the senior race. The top 60 finishers in each race received medals.

“It went well,” said Fallbrook coach Marco Arias. “We survived the heat, so that was a plus.”

The temperature at Morley Field exceeded 100 degrees during part of the day, forcing some of the later races to be shortened. That was not the case with the earlier Division I races; the juniors and seniors utilized a 2.95-mile course while the freshmen and sophomores ran 2.75 miles.

Roque had a time of 15:11 in his race. “He was disappointed with that one,” Arias said. “He said that the heat really affected him.”

Roque’s 23rd place finish was among 280 runners. “He had a pretty good showing,” Arias said.

Comerford posted a time of 16:16 in the freshman race. Juan Lopez also finished in the first half of the 246 freshmen runners, earning 81st place with a time of 17:36.

Froboese had a time of 16:40 in the field of 239 senior runners. “Connor had a very good race,” Arias said. “Had a great week of practice and was very focused.”

Fallbrook’s fastest junior was Alejandro Contreras, whose time of 19:23 placed 130th among the 248 competitors in the Division I junior race.

“Overall I wasn’t disappointed with the way they raced,” Arias said of his team. “They came out of it a little wiser.”

Arias also noted that his runners learned that they could compete in extreme conditions. “The guys came back really excited,” he said.
