Girls rugby holding registration

FALLBROOK – The 2012-13 rugby season has started with many high school and junior high school girls registering to play on the Fallbrook Girls Rugby Club (FGRC) team. Coaches Craig and Marin Pinnell will continue to accept registration forms until the end of November.

The first parent meeting has been held, and fundraising efforts have been outlined. All of the expenses of the FGRC are covered through fundraising projects and local sponsorships. This year “Support a Rugby Girl” has begun. Each high school team member has signed up to be sponsored by a local business, and the team’s fundraising coordinator will be making the initial contact with businesses in the next few weeks.

Highlights from the last season include winning their second USA Nationals crown and winning the inaugural USA High School Sevens Invitational. Other victories include winning back to back U19, U16, and U14 Southern California Championships, and winning their third International Fullerton Tournament. Several of the team members played with the USA U20 team, and the USA Women’s Sevens squad. With Sevens rugby back in the Olympics in 2016, this presents an exciting opportunity for female athletes.

Craig and Marin Pinnell served as forwards and backs coaches for the U17 and U19 Southern California All Star Griffins teams which won the West Coast Invitational and in which 10 Fallbrook players participated.

The 2013 season will begin its competitions in January, and will continue through June. Practices begin in December – Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays – after school at Ingold Field. The coaches have already been playing Sunday touch rugby with any interested players, old and new alike, as the team is “rarin’ to go.” Anyone interested in joining the team can contact the coaches at [email protected].
