Mixed youth and experience on varsity girls soccer roster

Last updated 12/6/2012 at Noon

Miguel Trejo’s first season as Fallbrook High School’s varsity girls soccer coach began Nov. 13 with tryouts which attracted 58 girls. Trejo made his cuts Nov. 15 and kept 38 of those players, placing 20 on the varsity and 18 on the junior varsity squad which will be coached by Ana Rojas.

“I’m extremely happy,” Trejo said of his roster. “There’s lots of talent, lots of committed girls.”

After making his cuts Trejo posted the varsity and junior varsity rosters the morning of Nov. 16 and the first practice was held that afternoon.

Trejo’s varsity roster consists of nine seniors, two juniors, five sophomores, and four freshmen. “Based on tryouts I saw a lot of talent. I’m really excited,” Trejo said. “It’s a stronger, more capable team than previous years.”

Although Trejo has not previously coached girls soccer, he spent the 2010-11 high school soccer season as the boys assistant coach and was the boys junior varsity head coach for 2011-12. Fallbrook’s 2011-12 girls team had a 5-18-1 record and lost all 10 Avocado East League matches.

The Warriors’ first home game, if weather permits, will be Dec. 11 against Mission Hills. Fallbrook will play in two December tournaments: the Dec. 13-15 Great Oak tournament in Temecula and the Dec. 26-28 So Cal Classic in Oceanside. This season Fallbrook is in the Avocado West League and is scheduled to open league play Jan. 15 at home against La Costa Canyon.

“We’re excited to have a lot of committed girls who want to do better this season,” Trejo said. “I hope to boost them up.”
