Drawhorn, T.J. Sumpter play in Aztec Bowl

In college football today the Aztec Bowl refers to a senior all-star game involving NCAA Division II and Division III players rather than San Diego State University’s former field, but two former Fallbrook High School players were in the 2012 Aztec Bowl which took place Dec. 14 in Monterrey, Mexico.

Kameron Drawhorn and T.J. Sumpter, both of whom are seniors at Western New Mexico University, played for the All-American Eagles in the Aztec Bowl. The Eagles defeated the Mexican National All-Stars by a 49-26 score.

“Overall it was a great experience. It was nice getting to play and meeting new players,” Drawhorn said.

“It was a really good experience,” Sumpter said. “It was a great blessing to be able to do that.”

Sumpter was surprised at his selection to the senior all-star game. “I didn’t really have a productive year,” he said. “It was a blessing. I really didn’t think I was going to get the opportunity.”

Sumpter is primarily a defensive back and was also a receiver for the Mustangs. On defense, he had seven tackles during the year, and while on offense he caught 13 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown. Sumpter concluded his college career with 83 tackles and four interceptions.

Drawhorn is also a defensive back, and he also handled kicking duties during his college career. He had 33 tackles and two interceptions during the 2012 season. Drawhorn also punted 38 times for an average of 42.2 yards and was successful on his only kick attempt for a point after touchdown. During his WNMU career he had 107 tackles, seven interceptions, 153 punts, 11 field goals, 44 extra points, and six pass completions on fake punts.

Drawhorn noted that he hadn’t previously been to Mexico. “The hospitality was pretty amazing,” he said.

Drawhorn and Sumpter are both scheduled to graduate from Western New Mexico University in May. Drawhorn is a criminal justice major and Sumpter is a business management major.
