Clinton Everett Folin

Clinton Everett Folin, 89, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Home in Glenwood, Minn. Memorial Services were held on March 13 at the Glenwood United Parish Church. Arrangements were with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

He was preceded in death by parents, Conrad and Ruth Folin, first wife Betty, an infant daughter, and a stepson.

He is survived by loving wife Helene of Glenwood; brother John (Priscilla) Folin of Mound, MN; children Chelene (Dan) Koenig of Canada, Scott (Loraine) Folin of Oregon, Randy (Denise) Folin of California, Robin (Derek) Clark Nevada, Lisa (Tom) Hebb of California, Sharon Quick of Texas, Charles (Barbara) Early of California, and John Early of Texas; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Clint was born May 16, 1923 in Brooten, Minn. and was raised there. He graduated from Brooten High School and attended the University of Minnesota before being drafted into the Army for three years of military service. Upon returning from the Army, he completed the graphic arts course at Dunwoody Institute and worked at several printing and advertising companies. He later was the editor and publisher of the Bertha Herald and Verndale Sun and started a new weekly newspaper, The Brooklyn Center Press.

In the summer of 1965, Clint and wife Betty and their five children moved from Brookyn Center, Minn. to Fallbrook, Calif., traveling by covered wagon. Cancer took his wife of 25 years soon thereafter.

He married Helene Ackerman Quick in Escondido, Calif. in 1974. They relocated to Brooten, Minn. where they lived in the house where he was born. In Brooten, they operated Folin’s Definitely Different collectibles shop for several years before moving to Glenwood, Minn.

Clint had a lifelong passion for storytelling. He could see a story in just about everything-a collectible item, an event, something unusual or something ordinary. But most of all, he loved to write down his stories and to share them with others. His stories will be remembered by many who read his articles and columns in the Pope County Tribune, Simple Pleasures, Folkstyles and for the American Amateur Press Association. He was known locally as “Hat Man” because of one of his columns titled “Under My Hat”.

He was involved as a member and volunteer with many organizations in every community in which he lived, most recently with the Young at Heart singers, Pope County Historical Society, Glenwood Senior Center and Lakeview Good Samaritan Society.

Clint’s life leaves family, friends, and colleagues with affectionate memories of his quick and quirky sense of humor, his breadth of interests, and with plenty of stories to tell and to read.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Clint’s memory to the Glenwood, Minnesota Pope County Museum.
