102 play in junior satellite tournament

The 27th Annual Fallbrook Winter Junior Satellite Tournament played at the Fallbrook Tennis Club attracted 102 players.

“We’d always be happy with a little bit more, but it wasn’t bad,” tournament organizer Dorothy Roth said of the participation.

The tournament was played Jan. 12-13 and Jan. 19-20. “The 12th and the 13th were cold, incredibly cold,” Roth said. “The next weekend was okay.”

The Fallbrook Winter Junior Satellite Tournament includes a consolation bracket, which guarantees every player at least two matches. “It’s good for them. They get to have another full match,” Roth said.

Four of the divisions utilized a round-robin format. Fallbrook’s Derek Deming and Bonsall’s Rebecca DuPont were the Mixed 16 Doubles champions; the Murrieta duo of Nicole Arribere and Emilia Liang won the Girls 16 Doubles round-robin competition; Temecula players Harrison Carrillo and Matthew Hynek won the Boys 14 Doubles title, and La Jolla’s Luke Garbacz won the Boys 10 Singles championship.

Deming was also the Boys 16 Singles champion. He defeated Randall Kras of Carlsbad in 6-3 and 6-2 sets in the finals.

Fallbrook’s Joe Stehly reached the Boys 14 Singles finals before a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Clayton Westcott of Carlsbad.

Marcelo Hernandez-Gamez of San Ysidro defeated Alexander Katzfey of Encinitas in the Boys 18 Singles finals. Katzfey took a 6-3 victory in the first set before Hernandez-Gamez salvaged the match with 6-1 and 6-4 victories.

Alana Andrews of Murrieta won the Girls 16 Singles after a 6-0, 6-2 championship match victory over Julie Rea of San Marcos. Rancho Santa Fe’s Grace Bruton won the Girls 14 Singles after a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Murrieta’s Madeline Bush in the championship match. Murrieta’s Faith Pearson won the Girls 12 Singles finals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Escondido’s Makenna Roehr. Jonathan Park of San Diego defeated Cameron Mofid of La Jolla in the Boys 12 Singles finals by 7-5 and 6-0 scores. Katerina Harvison of Cardiff prevailed over Chula Vista’s Sara Beckman in 6-2 and 6-3 sets to win the Girls 10 Singles title.
