Oink and Moo – Great Barbeque!

Over the years I have spent quite a bit of time in St. Louis, New Orleans and Houston; and love the barbeque styles that are unique to each of these cities. I have to say that Oink and Moo’s BBQ ribs rival any I have eaten in various restaurants in these areas.

I sampled three types of ribs at this Fallbrook establishment owned by Jennifer and Jonathan Arbel – and they were all appetizing – but I think that the Baby Back Ribs took the top spot. The smoky campfire flavor is enhanced by homemade BBQ sauce. These tender, “fall off the bone,” ribs are definitely winners. The Spare Ribs were also flavorful, but not as tender as the Baby Backs. The Bronto Beef Ribs possess a deep smoke flavor that saturates the entire piece.

There are several variables involved in the cooking of ribs, including marinating and time on the grill, but at Oink and Moo their homemade barbeque sauce elevates their ribs to exceptional. This BBQ sauce is secret, but I can taste a gentle sweetness that I think may be honey.

At first, during my rib sampling foray, I tried to be lady-like and use a knife and fork, but finally gave in and scooped up the ribs with my fingers. I wanted to make sure I savored every single bite. Oink and Moo is a place where you can throw caution to the wind – a place where you can get your hands and mouth sticky with barbeque sauce and no one blinks an eye.

Oink and Moo’s BBQ Pork Lettuce Cups were selected 2012 Best Taste of Fallbrook – People’s Choice. The creation of this pork dish is a slow process, but the results are worth it. The meat is rubbed with a blend of mysterious, unnamed spices which are allowed to seep into the pork for several hours. It is finally smoked in applewood and cherrywood for about 14 hours – with marvelous results.

The Bourbon Baked Beans with Pork is a mix of undetermined amounts of white beans, kidney beans, pork and bacon infused with a bourbon molasses sauce. This creative concoction has a bold, savory flavor.

Mimicking dessert with a touch of sweetness, Oink and Moo’s buttermilk biscuits are soft and drizzled with honey.

The crisp Truffle Fries are shoestring fries infused with truffle oil and garnished with a light sprinkling of parsley and parmesan cheese. Sweet Potato Fries are soft and drizzled with a honey/maple sauce, which enhances the sweetness of the naturally sweet potatoes.

I don’t normally mention beverages, but two of Oink and Moo’s drinks deserve applause. The lemonade is fresh-made from local lemons – some of them picked from Jennifer and Jonathan’s own grove.

It has been years since my friend Dawn, from Alabama, brewed her Southern Iced Tea, but as soon as I tasted Oink and Moo’s Southern Sweet Tea it brought back memories of this recipe from the Deep South. If you are a sweet tea aficionado – you need to try this!

Oink and Moo is a meat-eaters paradise – complete with great barbeque at great prices. No wonder the place was packed on a weeknight – fairly bursting with happy diners and their happy chatter.

Oink and Moo Burgers and BBQ is located at 121 North Pico Ave. (Corner of North Pico and Alvarado) in Fallbrook. It is open Wednesday through Sunday from 4:30 to 9 p.m. and is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Call (760) 451-6005 or visit http://www.oinkandmoo.com.
