Varsity softball takes second place in Warhawk Classic

FALLBROOK – After finishing as the consolation champions for the past three years at the Warhawk Classic, the Warriors varsity softball (8-2-1) team finally broke through in the semi-finals to earn a place in the March 16 championship game at Madison High School. With wins over Our Lady of Peace (18-0), Mission Bay (16-3), Christian (11-0) and Valley Center (7-0), the girls entered the semi-final game as the top seed in the tournament and matched up with Madison High, who was last year’s Division IV CIF runner-up.

The Warriors came away with a 2-1 victory. Dani DeVera lead the Warriors with two hits, one RBI and one run scored in a game that was not as close as the score indicated. Brooke Koran was solid on the mound giving up only three hits, while striking out five.

The championship game pitted undefeated Francis Parker (8-0) against the Warriors. In a back and forth game, the Warriors pounded out 10 hits, but the Lancers were able to get out of some tough spots with some excellent catches in the outfield to hold the Warriors to only three runs.

Parker used their eight hits, along with three Warrior errors to put up five runs and beat the Warriors. Junior short stop Hailey Drew had the hot bat for the Warriors with three hits, including a lead off triple in the third, and two runs scored. April Mattson added two hits (1B, 2B) and scored the Warriors third run. The Warriors defense turned a double play with left fielder Jenna Murphy running down a “sure hit” in the outfield, and throwing back in to double off the runner at second.

“We could not be prouder of the way these girls are playing right now,” said Coach Shannon Koran. “Our only two losses so far are to the #2 ranked team in California (Great Oak) and to Parker in the Championship game. No shame in that.”

DeVera was selected as the Warriors tournament MVP with an incredible .684 batting average. In six tournament games, she had 13 hits, (5 2B’s, 1 3B’s), drove in 10 runs and scored five times.
