Fallbrook High fashionistas prepare for show

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook High School fashion department has begun creating and sewing special projects for the Moda Fashion Show production which will be held on Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. at the Escondido Center for the Arts. The Moda Fashion Show is the year-end production for the Palomar College Fashion program.

Fallbrook High has been invited to showcase some of the student-made garments in the college fashion show. The Fallbrook fashion students are part of an articulation agreement with Palomar College; they complete the college level work in their high school fashion classes.

The Fashion Show theme this year is “The Beatles.” So the students will be producing retro items to submit for this show. Many fashion students are working with flowers and tie-dye effects on their garments to come up with that Beatles-era look.

Fallbrook High School has a very active fashion department. The school offers two different courses; “Fashion, Clothing & Design” and “ROP Fashion Merchandising.” “Students that complete both classes can earn up to 6 units of transferable college credit for free” said Lita Tabish, Fallbrook High School fashion instructor. “This gives them a great advantage when entering college.”

The students in the high school fashion program learn more than sewing and fashion skills. They learn marketing, basic business skills, display and presentation skills, color and design, as well as 21st century technical and work place skills.

“We have had several students go onto fashion school after completion of the Fallbrook program. I have had students placed at Woodbury University, Long Beach State, Cal-Poly, and of course Palomar College,” said Tabish.

Students in the Fallbrook fashion program are exposed to a multitude of career options in the Los Angele fashion district. They take field trips to several fashion design houses in Los Angeles and meet designers for a first-hand look at the fashion world.

The students also develop many of the needed 21st century skills that will help them become successful later in life. Students work on many project-based learning opportunities; such as creating a mock business plan and developing an electronic career portfolio.
