DUI motorhome driver from Poway causes major injury to male driver from Temecula on State Route 76

According to California Highway Patrol officer Jim Bettencourt, on Sunday, April 21, at approximately 1:40 p.m., 58-year-old Jeffrey Thomas Smith of Poway was driving his 2002, 34-foot Hurricane Motorhome on eastbound State Route 76, east of Vista Way. Smith stopped on the right shoulder directly behind a 59-year-old male from Temecula who was also stopped on the right shoulder adjusting items in his vehicle so they would not move around.

The 59-year-old male had just finished asking his wife to watch the motorhome because it was close behind and he was afraid it would hit him.

Suddenly, his wife felt the impact of the motorhome colliding into the back of their vehicle. Her husband was pinned between the two vehicles.

The 59-year-old male from Temecula was transported via Mercy Air to Palomar hospital with major injuries. His wife the passenger in the vehicle did not sustain any injuries.

Smith was arrested and booked into Vista Detention Facility for felony driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury.

This collision remains under investigation.
