The greening of the downtown parking lot

FALLBROOK - A shady new avenue of trees promises to greet drivers as they enter the parking lot between the Fallbrook Art Center and the library, thanks once again to Save Our Forest (SOF) volunteers.

Early Sunday morning, April 7, over 40 volunteer tree planters assembled with shovels and gloves to plant eight 36-inch box Chinese Elm trees, under the supervision of Jackie Heyneman, chairperson of the Save Our Forest branch of the Fallbrook Land Conservancy. Volunteers included Miss Fallbrook and Miss Teen Fallbrook contestants.

The task, which involved mixing the soil amendments, carefully setting the tree at the right depth, back-filling the holes, and cleaning up, was accomplished in 2 ½ hours, with juice, coffee and donuts to keep the energy level up.

This project was a real community effort. Valued contributors included Rich Tamone of Peter’s Paving, for cutting the asphalt; Fallbrook Equipment for equipment use; and Major Market and Café Primo who supplied refreshments.

“It was a truly magnificent day for those of us at the ‘root’ of it all,” said Heyneman. “Many hands make light work that goes quickly.”

The purpose of the downtown Treescape Project is to provide a graceful setting of greenery in the center of Fallbrook in order to reduce heat and glare from buildings, roads and paved areas.

More plantings are planned soon, and volunteers are always needed for tree maintenance as well. For more information, call Jackie Heyneman at (760) 728-5395.
