She was born in St. Louis, Mo. on June 16, 1920 to Margaret Payne Klusmeier and William Klusmeier Jr. She grew up in South Bend, Ind., graduated from St. Mary’s Academy, and attended Indiana University. Her parents, her sister Jeanne Frank, and Bob, her beloved husband of 71 years, all preceded her in death.

She married Robert M. Sweeney Feb. 14, 1942 in the Log Chapel on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. They moved to California a few years later and lived in Anaheim and Pasadena before moving to Fallbrook in 1994.

Her entire married life was devoted to the care of her husband and their home. Theirs was love story that spanned more than seven decades.

Mary Lou loved to travel. Over the years, she and her husband visited England, Ireland, France, Spain, Switzerland, Holland, Austria, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Italy multiple times. Malta, Tunisia, and Greece were also visited. Among her favorite trips were a flight on the Concorde and a cruise on the Queen Elizabeth II. Her most memorable and spiritually rewarding experience was the honor of having an audience with Pope John II.

Mary Lou was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Fallbrook. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.

A Mass will be said for her on June 19, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. at St. Peters Catholic Church. Arrangements were made by Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary.
