Fallbrook 4-H wins Best Presented Barn for beef at county fair - Three steers win class, all eight place

All eight market steers entered in the 2013 San Diego County Fair by Fallbrook 4-H members placed in their classes, including three which won first place, and Fallbrook 4-H also won the Best Presented Barn award for 4-H beef groups.

The steers were raised by eight different Fallbrook 4-H members. “All eight did very well,” said Fallbrook 4-H beef group advisor Debbie Torres. “We’re very proud of them. Another good year, very productive year.”

The market beef classes were based on colors and weight. In Class 2, Hunter Stites took first place while Walter Philley won second place. Matthew Kenney won Class 1 with Collin Kooyman placing third and Genevieve Mason taking fourth. Cole Janikowski captured first place in Class 6 while Dylan Janikowski was fourth in that class. Alex Beckett took second in Class 5.

Classes 1, 2, and 3 were for non-black, or All Other Colors, steers. Kenney’s steer weighed 1,098 pounds, Mason’s was 1,148 pounds, Kooyman’s scaled at 1,151 pounds, Philley’s weighed 1,182 pounds, and Stites’ was 1,185 pounds.

Classes 4, 5, 6, and 7 were for black steers (Classes 8 through 10 were for heifers). Beckett raised a 1,233-pound steer, Cole Janikowski brought a 1,329-pound animal to the scale, and Dylan Janikowski had a 1,386-pound bovine.

Stites and Beckett also received 4-H reserve champion designation for their colors. Stites won reserve 4-H champion honors for All Other Colors. Beckett earned reserve 4-H champion designation for black steers. The top two steers in each class competed for the color grand champion and reserve champion awards.

In the showmanship contest Beckett won first place in the 4-H senior division. That advanced her to the master showmanship competition for all large animals, where she placed fifth. In the 4-H intermediate class showmanship competition, Stites was third and Dylan Janikowski earned fifth place.

The Bred and Fed competition is for animals bred in San Diego County and nourished from feed stores or other sources within the county. In the junior division, Stites placed second, Kenney was third, and Kooyman took fifth. All three obtained their steers from KND Shorthorns in Fallbrook.

The judging criteria for the Best Presented Barn award included an educational panel presentation, signage identification of the area, cleanliness and safety of the aisles and stalls or pens, and the animals’ appearance and condition. The barns were also judged on interaction with the public. “Our kids are very good with the public,” Torres said. “I think that helps a lot in barn competition.”

Fallbrook 4-H had placed second in the 2012 Best Presented Barn contest.

“I’m very proud of the kids. They did a great job. We have a great bunch of parents as well,” Torres said. “They work well together, and when we need to get the barn cleaned up and nicely presented they jump in and get it done.”
