Firefighters contain roadside brush fire at 12 acres near Lawrence Welk Resort and Interstate 15

ESCONDIDO - Firefighters contained a blaze that blackened about a dozen acres of brush near the southbound side of Interstate 15 near the Lawrence Welk Resort yesterday, August 19, and prompted authorities to close three lanes in the area.

Callers reported flames and smoke between Gopher Canyon and Deer Springs roads shortly after 9:30 a.m., which led to the temporary closure of three southbound lanes, according to Cal Fire and the California Highway Patrol.

Cal Fire Battalion Chief Nick Schuler said fire crews knocked down the blaze by early afternoon, but firefighters remained at the scene for several hours.

The California Highway Patrol has reported that the #3 and #4 lanes on southbound Interstate 15 just south of Gopher Canyon Road will remain closed until at least 1:30 p.m. today due to a vegetation fire that has been burning close to the roadway.

The fire erupted at approximately 9:30 this morning and is only 30 percent contained. At times, helicopters have been landed on the freeway to assist in firefighting efforts.

A Sig Alert was issued for the incident at 10 a.m.

The CHP has stated southbound traffic is currently backed up into the Temecula area.
