People who become lost or injured in San Diego County could be billed for rescue

SAN DIEGO - People who become lost or injured in San Diego County as a result of illegal activity could be billed for recovery expenses under an ordinance amended in July.

Supervisors amended San Diego County Ordinance 364.1 to allow up to $12,000 in recovery expenses from individuals who become lost or injured as a result of violating federal, state or local laws. Under the amended ordinance, law breakers can also be arrested or cited for criminal offenses.

The fees only apply to those who break the law, such as a rescue operation as a result of illegal drinking.
