Drew named softball team MVP

Fallbrook High School junior Hailey Drew was named the Warriors’ softball team Most Valuable Player during the team’s post-season banquet June 3 at the San Luis Rey Downs Country Club.

“She had a great year offensively and defensively and was a big contributor to our team, and it was well deserved,” said co-coach Patti Drew.

Hailey Drew led the team with a .439 batting average. Her 32 runs scored, six home runs, 17 walks drawn, 15 stolen bases, .535 on-base percentage, and .780 slugging percentage also led the team while her 36 hits shared the team lead. Drew drove in 17 runs during 2013. On defense she had a .908 fielding percentage.

“She’s a leader both offensively and defensively,” said Fallbrook co-coach Shannon Koran. “She holds the infield together on defense and she’s really the kind of kid every team wants nine of.”

Sophomore center fielder Dani DeVera was the team’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player. DeVera’s 36 hits shared the team lead with Hailey Drew and included eight doubles and five triples, both of which led the team. DeVera also led the Warriors with 22 runs batted in. She scored 16 runs and stole seven bases. DeVera ended the season with a .439 batting average and a .643 slugging percentage.

“Well deserved for her,” Koran said of DeVera’s award.

“She had a great year. She really came through for us in a lot of different situations,” Patti Drew said.

Brooke Koran was named the team’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player. Koran pitched in all 27 of Fallbrook’s games and posted a 15-10 record, including three shutout wins, with a 2.25 earned run average in 168 innings. She struck out 90 batters during the season.

“She had a good year on the mound. She did a lot for us,” Drew said.

Jenna Murphy received Most Improved honors. Murphy, a sophomore, took over as the starting second baseman after injuries from an automobile accident ended April Mattson’s season. In 15 games Murphy batted .345 with a .424 on-base average and a .448 slugging percentage. Her ten hits included a home run, and she scored 11 times while driving in nine runs. Murphy stole three bases during 2013.

“We asked her to do a lot of different things this year and she really stepped up and did a good job,” Drew said. “She made a lot of progress this season and we look forward to her being a starter next year.”

“We expect her to be a pretty big contributor next year for us,” Shannon Koran said. “She’s a tremendous athlete.”

Sophomore Morgan Pilbin was given the Coaches’ Award. Pilbin had been a catcher last year, but the presence of senior starter Brittni Arena led Koran and Drew to place Pilbin in right field. “We asked her to play a brand new position this year and she worked really hard at it,” Drew said.

“She stepped right in and has really become an outfielder,” Koran said. “Worked hard at something that was new to her and was happy to do it.”

At the plate, Pilbin had a .303 batting average. Her 22 hits included two doubles and two triples. She scored eight runs while driving in 12 teammates, and she stole two bases.

Fallbrook finished the season with a 16-10-1 record, including a 1-0 loss in 11 innings at Calexico in the first round of the CIF Division I playoffs and a 5-5 Avocado West League mark which shared third place in the league standings.

The banquet also included the presentation of awards for the junior varsity team. Freshman shortstop Brittany Cox was the Most Valuable Player, sophomore pitcher and second baseman Kaydn Parker received Most Outstanding Offensive Player honors, junior catcher Emily Casillas garnered the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award, and freshman pitcher and second baseman Hailey George took home the Coaches’ Award.
