Man's body discovered in San Luis Rey River

OCEANSIDE - The decomposing body of a man with no obvious signs of trauma was found in a homeless encampment in the San Luis Rey River in Oceanside, police said today.

The fully clothed body of a white man, believed to be 40 to 50 years old, was found floating face down in a secluded area of the river near the 700 block of Capistrano Drive about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, according to Oceanside Police and the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Lifeguards recovered the body and brought it to shore. Death was confirmed due to "obvious decomposition,'' officials with the Medical Examiner's Office said.

The body appeared to have been in the water for less than 72 hours before it was found, and there were no apparent signs of obvious trauma, Oceanside police Lt. Valencia Saadat said.

Saadat said that due to the condition of the body, identification was not immediately possible.
