Annual promotion allowing free admission for children to San Diego theme parks and museums starts today

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Tourism Authority's annual promotion in which children receive free admission to San Diego area theme parks and museums during the month of October begins today.

Among the so-called ''Kidvasion'' deals are free admission to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, museums in Balboa Park, Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, Legoland California in Carlsbad, Sea World San Diego and the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.

The zoo and Safari Park are planning children's activities throughout the month, including a musical production featuring the Fisher-Price Little People.

Youngsters will also be able to eat for free at many hotel restaurants throughout the region.

Most of the bargains are for youth aged 12 and under, but the deals and restrictions vary by venue. The restrictions generally limit the freebies to a corresponding number of adult admissions.

The zoo has offered kids-free Octobers for more than 25 years. Area tourism officials expanded the program last year to get families to extend the summer traveling season into a month when tourism traditionally falls off.

Other offerings include unlimited ride wristbands at Belmont Park at Mission Beach, free train rides on the Coaster and Amtrak's Pacific Surfline -- between San Diego and Oceanside only -- and a free surf lesson at the Surf Diva Surf School in La Jolla.

A list of deals is online at sandiego.org.
