Second trustee resigns from FUHSD this year

A second trustee has tendered his resignation from the Fallbrook Union High School District (FUHSD). Cliff Sumrall, who was elected to the board in November of last year, stated his last day of service will be Oct. 22.

“Mr. Sumrall’s resignation was prompted by his anticipated move to a residence outside of our district boundaries,” said Dale Mitchell, Ed.D., superintendent of FUHSD.

In June, trustee Bill O’Connor resigned his position effective Aug. 2 after seven years of service on the board, due to the fact that his residence is now within the newly established Bonsall Unified School District.

O’Connor was replaced with James O’Donnell, who officially joined the board on Aug. 8.

Now, for the second time in a little over three months, the board will search for another replacement trustee.

“[FUHSD] is seeking applications from interested residents within the District’s boundaries to serve as an appointed member of the Board of Trustees to fill the position until the scheduled election in November 2014,” stated Mitchell in a statement to the press. “Even though Mr. Sumrall holds a 2016 seat, the position must be on the 2014 ballot. The position will be referred to as “short term,” which means the person elected will serve for only two years, i.e., to the end of the 2016 term.”

“My hope, and I believe the hope of the board of trustees as well, is that the individual selected for the provisional appointment plan to be a candidate for election in November 2014, whether for a two-year term or for a four-year term of office,” said Mitchell.

Mitchell said candidates must 18 years of age or older, citizens of California, and residents and registered voters in the Fallbrook Union High School District.

It is expected that the FUHSD board of trustees will appoint a person to fill the vacancy at a special meeting on Nov. 4.

“At that time, candidates who have submitted completed applications and meet eligibility criteria will be interviewed by board members,” stated Mitchell. “If the appointee resides within the Bonsall Union School District, he/she would no longer be eligible to serve on the board commencing with the July 1, 2014 unification of the Bonsall District.”

From Sumrall’s departure on Oct. 22 until the new trustees anticipated arrival on Nov. 4, the board will operate with a reduced number.

“This means that the board of trustees will consist of only four trustees until the board makes an appointment on Nov. 4, and that person is sworn into office,” said Mitchell. “We are looking into having the person sworn into office the same night, Nov. 4.”

Those interested in being considered for appointment to this open position may obtain an application form and more detailed information on the qualifications for serving on the board of trustees by picking it up at the district office, 2234 S. Stage Coach Lane, Fallbrook, emailing [email protected], or visiting http://www.fuhsd.net.

Application deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 5 p.m.
