FBI engages in standoff with man at San Diego bureau office

A standoff was underway today at a gated FBI field office in Sorrento Valley with a man considered to be possibly armed and dangerous, although he did not show a weapon, police said.

The standoff with the unknown suspect began at 11:41 a.m. at the office, at 10300 Vista Sorrento Parkway, and as of 1:30 p.m. was still considered an active incident, according to San Diego police, who were assisting the FBI.

The suspect contacted or was contacted by local news agencies, it was reported.

He told NBC7 that he went to the building to speak with an agent and that he feared for his life, the television station reported.

He also called CBS8 asking to talk to an agent, a CBS8 anchor reported.

The suspect's motive was unknown, police said.

FBI agents said they were handling the active incident with the help of San Diego police.

The incident began at 11:41 a.m., and there was a traffic crash reported on the adjacent 805 Freeway at the same time. But there was no link between the incidents reported by the FBI or police. By 1 p.m., the crash had been cleared.
