Banner Fire grows to 150 acres

Update - According to Cal Fire, as of 4:30 p.m. on July 3, the "Banner Fire" was at 150 acres and 15 percent containment. The areas of Kentwood and Whispering Pines continued to be under a mandatory evacuation.

An Evacuation Center had been established at Jeff Martin Park in Julian. There have been two residences and one outbuilding destroyed.

More information will be released as it becomes available.

Cal Fire reported at 11:40 a.m. today that a wildland fire off Banner Grade was burning towards the east end of Julian. At that time, the fire was at 35-40 acres, with a moderate to rapid rate of spread and an immediate structure threat. Multiple air and ground resources were committed with more enroute.

Fire Captain Kendal E. Bortisser, Cal Fire public information officer, later reported that 200 homes were threatened in Whispering Pines. As per the Sheriff, Whispering Pines and Cantwood are both being evacuated. Julian High School is the evacuation center.

At 12:32 p.m., the Banner Fire was at 60 acres, still with a moderate to rapid rate of spread, with medium fuels. There is still an immediate structure threat. Whispering Pines has a mandatory evacuation in progress.
