UPDATE: Teen fatally injured on Fallbrook Street identified as Alfonso Martinez, 17

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office has reported that the 17-year-old male fatally injured on Fallbrook Street Tues., July 29 has been identified as Alfonso Martinez of Fallbrook. The office also stated the cause of death has been established as the result of an accident.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the teen was lying in the westbound lane of Fallbrook Street (800 block) about 12:28 a.m. Tuesday morning when a 2004 Honda Civic driven by a 36-year-old Fallbrook man struck the boy.

CHP public information officer Jim Bettencourt said the driver of the vehicle immediately called 911 and stayed on the scene until law enforcement personnel arrived.

Officers said it was "unknown why the pedestrian was lying in the roadway prior to the collision and how he got there. It is still unclear if another vehicle struck the pedestrian prior to the Honda."

The boy was pronounced dead by responding paramedics.

The Medical Examiner said Martinez' body sustained blunt force injuries to the head and torso.

Authorities are still investigating the incident and anyone with information about this matter is asked to call the Oceanside CHP office at (760) 757-1675 during normal business hours.
