UPDATE: CARJACKER ARRESTED in Oceanside by Sheriff's Dept.; lead detective calls Fallbrook residents "impressive"

The San Diego County Sheriff's Dept. has reported that the suspect wanted in a carjacking case that began in Vista and made a getaway into Fallbrook on Monday morning was arrested last night (Tues., Sept. 2) in Oceanside.

"The suspect was taken into custody last night about 5:15 p.m. in Oceanside," reported Sheriff's gang detective Carlos Canela of the Vista station.

Canela said the Hispanic male suspect, identified as Uriel Ramirez, 22, was taken into custody without incident and was the only individual sought in connection with the crime.

Ramirez, who is being charged with the carjacking, was spotted in Bonsall by a Fallbrook Sheriff's deputy when the alert went out over the radio about the crime. The deputy started pursuing Ramirez, who eventually crashed the vehicle near Interstate 15 and ran into the Lake Rancho Viejo housing development off Dulin Road.

Residents of the area soon saw a very large police presence engaged in the manhunt and the Sheriff's ASTREA helicopter overhead aiding in the search.

Detective Canela said, "The [Lake Rancho Viejo] community was great in providing us with tips; they did a lot to assist us."

Canela said the Fallbrook residents were "good people who came out and talked to us; that helped lead our investigation."

"I was impressed with the community; after we temporarily suspended the search in that community, we got calls with fresh leads about suspicious activity," said Canela. "Unfortunately [Ramirez] had gotten out of the area by that point but we eventually caught up with him before he could do anything else."

Of the manpower involved in this incident, Canela said, "We really wanted to get this guy."

Ramirez has been booked into the Vista Jail; bail not available; and is currently charged with six felony counts, some of which include: carjacking, assault with a firearm on a person, participation in a gang felony, evading police officers with disregard for public safety; and kidnapping.

After conducting a 3-hour search in Fallbroook today, the Sheriff's Dept. has suspended the operation without having located the suspect. However, authorities with the agency said "We know who we are looking for."

The incident began shortly after 10:30 a.m. today in Vista when a Hispanic male carjacked a Honda vehicle.

When the incident was reported, the Sheriff's Dept. issued an alert and a Fallbrook deputy spotted the suspect and vehicle on State Route 76 in Bonsall.

The Fallbrook deputy began pursuing the suspect and the man ended up crashing the Honda near Interstate 15.

At that time, the suspect ran from the vehicle toward the Rancho Viejo housing development area. The Sheriff's Dept. called in the ASTREA helicopter to begin searching the area and multiple law enforcement officers came to the area in support of the search.

The suspect, who was armed, appears to have been successful in eluding officers, but due to his distinctive appearance, he has been identified.

The Sheriff's Dept. said the suspect has the words "San Marcos" tattooed on his upper lip.
