Navy member from Riverside arrested after fatally stabbing girlfriend, vehicle pursuit

RIVERSIDE – A member of the US Navy suspected of stabbing his girlfriend to death in the City of Riverside Sunday, July 10, was apprehended this morning; the day after he fatally stabbed his girlfriend.

He was arrested after leading authorities on an early morning pursuit from San Diego back to the City of Riverside, where the deadly stabbing occurred, according to Riverside Police Detective Adrian Tillett.

Riverside Police officers conducted an investigation that revealed the suspect, who was identified as Jared Gordon Bischoff, 25, a Navy member who resides in Riverside, met with his girlfriend at the intersection where he stabbed her numerous times. Bischoff then fled the area.

After completing their initial investigation, Riverside Police officers issued a BOLO – or a Be On The Lookout – for the vehicle Bischoff was believed to be driving to all surrounding allied law enforcement agencies.

“At 5:00 a.m. today, as a result of information received from the Riverside Police Department, officers with the San Diego Police Department located Bischoff in their city and a pursuit ensued,” Tillett explained in a press release.

California Highway Patrol officers took up the chase as it headed first northbound on the I-15 and then onto the 91 freeway.

Bischoff reached speeds around 100 mph and avoided a freeway spike strip before he exited the freeway at Madison Street in Riverside. Once the pursuit entered the City of Riverside, Riverside Police officers took over the chase.

The pursuit continued through city streets until it ended at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Rubidoux Boulevard. Bischoff gave up peacefully and was taken into custody without further incident.

“Bischoff was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for murder,” according to Tillett. Bischoff was arrested just after 6:30 a.m., about 12 hours after the victim died.

The incident began Sunday at about 5:15 p.m., when City of Riverside emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from a citizen reporting what they believed to be a possible domestic disturbance near the intersection of Calmhill Drive and California Avenue in Riverside.

At about the same time, officers were flagged down by witnesses who advised officers regarding a woman who was gravely injured in the street at the location.

The officers arrived almost immediately and found a female victim unconscious and suffering from multiple stab wounds. Paramedics treated the victim at the scene before they transported her to Riverside Community Hospital.

The woman later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead by hospital staff. A nurse from Riverside Community Hospital who requested to remain anonymous said the victim was stabbed about a dozen times.

A preliminary coroner’s report indicated the woman was stabbed at about 5:15 p.m. She was pronounced dead just over an hour later at about 6:23 p.m. According to the coroner’s preliminary report, the victim was found in the 7700 block of Calmhill Drive. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending a full coroner’s investigation and notification of her family. As of Monday at about 9:45 a.m. the victim had only been identified as an adult female.

Detectives from the department’s Robbery/Homicide Unit along with evidence technicians from the department’s Forensic Unit responded to the crime scene and assumed the investigation.

“Detectives are being assisted by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office and the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner,” according to Tillett.

Even though Bischoff is now in custody, the investigation is still ongoing at this time.

According to Commander John Perkins, the public affairs officer at Naval Surface Forces for the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Bischoff is assigned to the USS Essex, an amphibious assault ship.

A jail record search revealed Bischoff was booked on suspicion of four felonies, including using a firearm in the commission of a felony, kidnapping, murder, and recklessly evading police. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at the Riverside Hall of Justice July 13.
