Warrior girls 10th at CIF cross country meet

Seventeen Division II schools had the minimum five girls to obtain a team score at the CIF San Diego Section cross country meet Nov. 18 at Morley Field in San Diego, and Fallbrook High School finished 10th among those 17 schools.

"I'm really happy with how everybody did," said Fallbrook co-coach Lisa Hasvold.

Fallbrook had a team score of 292 points based on the finishing positions of the Warriors' first five runners. The ninth-place Division II team was Carlsbad; the Lancers accumulated 284 points. A team score of 308 points gave 11th place to Grossmont.

"We're just a young team," said Fallbrook coach Bret Hasvold.

The Warriors' first runner across the finish line was junior Audrey Petersen, who placed 31st overall with a time of 20:24.7 on the 2.96-mile course.

"Tough race, but she competed all the way to the end," Bret Hasvold said.

"She was struggling around the mile," Lisa Hasvold said. "She regrouped and got the mental toughness she needed. I'm thrilled, especially after what she experienced last week."

The Nov. 11 Valley League championship meet on the 3.05-mile Kit Carson Park course in Escondido included a time of 22:00.3 and a 12th-place finish for Petersen.

Fallbrook's fastest time at the league meet was posted by senior Gisselle Rivera, who placed 36th at the CIF meet with a time of 20:44.1. "It wasn't her best day, but she didn't quit," said Bret Hasvold. "She just stayed competitive."

The 64th overall finisher was Fallbrook freshman Iselah Cabello, whose time was 22:01.5. A time of 22:58.1 gave junior Hannah Diverde 76th place. Fallbrook's other freshman in the race, Jade Kennedy, finished 85th and had a time of 23:32.4.

"I think they're surprising themselves," Lisa Hasvold said of Cabello and Kennedy. "It's exciting to watch."

Fallbrook sophomore Maya Rink placed 98th at 24:35.1 and junior Katie Hutzler was the 110th finisher 25:45.1 after the race began.
