Fallbrook A Leer announces essay and poetry contest winners

FALLBROOK – Fallbrook A Leer/Reading Family Literacy, Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning, has announced the 2018 student essay and art/poetry winners.

They winners will be recognized Saturday April 14, at the 14th annual Fallbrook A Leer/Reading event at Maie Ellis auditorium, beginning with registration at 9:30 a.m. and the program at 10 a.m. Each winner will receive a certificate, a gift card, as well as other items donated for this purpose.

Third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students submitted an original poem honoring Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez. Third grade winner Delonte Hillary is from La Paloma Elementary, fourth grade winner Joshua Avila is from Maie Ellis Elementary, and fifth grade winner Ayden Rice is from Fallbrook Street Elementary.

Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students were asked to write an essay on Chavez's legacy and how it affects community service and non-violence. Sixth grade winner Dacey Bender is from Live Oak Elementary and a student of Mrs. Brown. Seventh grade winner Jaiden Jimenez and eighth grade winner Valeria Peredia are both from Potter Junior High School and students of Mr. Rivas and Ms. Phillips, respectively.

Fallbrook A Leer/Reading Family Literacy program includes workshops for parents and story reading for students pre-school through fifth grade. A crafts Fair and entertainment, as well as food and games, will be available at the Flagpole patio of Maie Ellis beginning at 11:15 a.m. Books will be given to every participant and backpacks for every child.

Through the generosity of local donors, businesses and community members, the event is free to Fallbrook families. Because space is limited, parents must pre-register their children through their respective public schools. Flyers have been sent home with students from each school in FUESD. Parents are encouraged to register early and call their local school for more details.
