"Hummingbirds: A Celebration of Their Beauty Through Art" is an amazing book of illustrations on every species of hummingbird you have ever wanted to see, have thought you saw or wanted to know about is available now. Through the eyes and hands of a remarkable artist, the talent of one widely-known Fallbrookian of many years, Gamini Ratnavira's artistic renderings were created through his knowledge and study of these fluttering elusive beauties. With the help of his wife and...

When Jim Lyle purchased one of the art benches at the Save Our Forest auction November 2020, he had Live Oak Park in his mind. Lyle has dedicated several volunteer years to clearing poison plant species, cleaning out weed overgrowth and repairing the footbridge to welcome visitors to the cool and natural spot. Because the bench he bought was painted by recognized natural world artist Neill Ketchum – replete with flora and fauna – the park was a perfect spot for it. The Fal...
A group of volunteer "partners in preservation" of Fallbrook' s Live Oak Park and its history planted the 100th tree to celebrate the park's 100 years, Sunday, Dec. 3. The volunteers included Jackie Heyneman and Roger Boddaert and their work involved snippets, plantings, pruning and maintenance in a non-stop effort. Stories of snow falls temporarily halting shovels, railroad bridges washing out, saving individual live oaks on Live Oak Park Road, saving trees are things of...
On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, a group of hearty members of Save Our Forest and Fallbrook's Live Oak Park staff, including two home-grown park rangers (Fallbrook High graduates), all gathered to serve as cracker jack live oak planting teams. Both groups kept equal pace starting at one end working toward a central spot in the manner in which I somehow imagined the Continental Railroad was built. There was no racing here – just complete cooperation and back and forth support to e...
I recently attended "first Sunday free" Gallery Day at the California Center for The Arts Campus in Escondido. Though "free is good," I can say that you will all want to go to this before it closes. It's a perfect chance for a Frida Kahlo fix. In fact, two "Frida's from Fallbrook" have become part of this exhibit thanks to local, but nationally known, artist Daniel F. Martinez. The exhibit is called "The World of Frida" and it came here from Walnut Creek. I made it a point to...
The more things change in art, the more they don't remain the same, especially not now during our time of COVID-19. What's trending now may not be what was in November 2019. But thank goodness artists keep one step ahead based on their own goals of artistic excellence. No one had any idea of the days that were to follow Save Our Forest's Take A Seat auction fundraiser for environmental classroom education Nov. 2. Since that time, some artists have applied skills to making...
Catching up with Fallbrook artist BJ Lane since Save Our Forest's Art Bench Auction to support Fallbrook's elementary schools' environmental education programs, Nov. 2, 2019l, has not been easy. A favorite at community events and gatherings, Lane is known for her commitment to Fallbrook's Wine & a Bite events, the downtown art scene and presenting local art talks about the creative process. Recently, she was fixing her rain-damaged studio, when the roof caved in and black mold...
