Scoma named team MVP at girls lacrosse banquet

Angie Scoma was named the most valuable player of the Fallbrook High School varsity girls lacrosse team during the girls lacrosse awards banquet June 1 at Zion Lutheran Church.

Scoma, a senior attacker, set a school record with 51 goals during the 2006 season. She was also selected to the North County Conference second team and was named as an academic All-American by US Lacrosse.

“Angie’s just a great leader. She’s a leader on the field; she was just an incredible presence on our attack,” said Fallbrook varsity lacrosse coach Linda Cook.

Cook noted that Scoma came through when the team needed something. “She would just do it. Just a wonderful person, and the team made the right choice. She’s definitely a leader on the team,” Cook said.

Scoma will be attending Brigham Young University, which has a club lacrosse program.

Senior midfielder Nicole Cook received the Best Offensive Player award at the team banquet. Cook, who earned a berth on the North County Conference first team and also received academic All-American recognition from US Lacrosse, scored 38 goals in 2006. “She’s incredibly consistent, and it’s nice to be able to use her. She just fills in wherever there’s a gap,” Linda Cook said.

Nicole Cook will be attending the Stevens Institute of Technology, where she will play both lacrosse and field hockey for the Ducks.

The Best Defensive Player award went to sophomore goalie Brittany Hull. Hull, who earned second-team North County Conference honors, set a school record with 112 saves. “Brittany Hull is an outstanding goalie, one of the top in the county,” Linda Cook said.

Senior midfielder Ashten Cisneros and junior defender Rachel Maxwell shared the Most Improved Player award. “Ashten is not the same player she was last year,” Cook said. “This year she figured it out.”

Maxwell had not played lacrosse prior to this season. “Rachel was so remarkable,” Cook said. “By the time she tried out we put her immediately on the varsity team.”

Cisneros and Jordan both earned honorable mention North County Conference recognition.

Maxwell also received the Coaches’ Award, which is given to a player who demonstrates hard work, dedication, great sportsmanship, respect, integrity, coachability, and the respect of other players.

“She definitely earned that award,” Cook said. “This kid was one of the most incredible kids I’ve ever coached. She has unbreakable determination, hard work, great work ethic.”

Cook selected the Coaches’ Award, while the team members selected the recipients of the other awards.

The Most Inspirational Player award sent to senior Rebecca Jordan. “She was the team player. Whenever we needed to be lifted up, our spirits were a little down, Rebecca was always there,” Cook said. “She would also help lift me up out there as well.”

Awards for the junior varsity lacrosse squad were also presented. Kandace Kooyman received the Most Valuable Player award, Christina Payson was given the Best Offensive Player honor, Liz Natonski was selected as Best Defensive Player, Maureen Elizano took home Most Improved Player honors, Melissa Morrison was the recipient of the Most Inspirational Player award, and Patty Benitez was given the Coaches’ Award selected by junior varsity coach Heidi Kooyman.

“I think it was a really, really nice way, with all the awards, to end the season on a high note,” Linda Cook said.
