Microchip clinic offered for large animals

The Deer Springs Fire Safe Council is sponsoring a Microchip Clinic for Large Animals (no pets). Owners in the greater Fallbrook/Bonsall area are invited to attend.

The clinic is part of the council’s Large Animal Emergency Evacuation planning. It is scheduled for Saturday, October 28, from 9 a.m. to noon. Reservations are required. The cost per animal is $40 versus the regular charge of $69.50. Plus, owners save the $55 vet visit fee. Part of the cost includes a tax-deductible donation to the Deer Springs Fire Safe Council. The veterinarian can also administer vaccines. The clinic will be held at Creekside Veterinary Service, 8751 Old Castle Road, Escondido.

If an animal becomes separated from its owner for any reason, a microchip can establish ownership. Special scanners can read the imbedded chips and then locate the owner’s registration. The tiny chip provides a permanent “inside” identification number for the animal. The number can be used for positive ID in cases of disaster, theft or loss and at inspections, events and when buying and selling. During the 2003 wildfires over 3,000 large animals were evacuated countywide. Animals became lost as they were moved from location to location. It often took weeks, even months, before owners were reunited with their animals.

Call Rod Chapin at (760) 415-3398 soon to reserve a time slot, as space is limited.
