William Emanuel Hoppe

William Emanuel Hoppe passed away on September 20, 2006, in Fallbrook at the age of 95. He was born in Los Angeles, CA, July 19, 1911.

Bill grew up on Hooper Avenue and Kenwood Avenue in Los Angeles, the son of William Otto Hoppe and Leticia Katherine (Diehl) Hoppe. His father was a tool and die maker.

Bill graduated from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles in 1927. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA followed by a Master’s Degree in 1933.

He taught at Beaumont High School in Beaumont, CA, where he met and later married Georgia (Sue) Bywater in 1937. He taught English, public speaking and dramatic arts at Jefferson Union High School in Daly City, CA, later at Humbolt State College in Arcata, CA, and, after that, at the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR.

During World War II he taught English and aircraft mechanics at the US Army Air Base at 29 Palms, CA.

After the war he worked with his partner, George Eltinge, manufacturing and installing Venetian blinds and flooring. He later became a property developer in Los Angeles County, which he continued throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

He was baptized in 1953. With his wife Sue he attended View Park Church in Los Angeles, Crenshaw Christian Church in Inglewood, Loch Haven Christian Church in Inglewood and First Christian Church in Fallbrook.

Bill and Sue moved to Fallbrook in 1975.

He is survived by his wife, Sue; two children; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

His daughter, Linda Martinez, 59, lives in San Diego, CA. His son, William Hoppe, MD, 57, is a medical missionary in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Grandchildren are Virginia Reed (35), Robert Martinez (34), Paul Hoppe (22), Laura Hoppe (20), Mark Hoppe (18), David Hoppe (15) and Steven Hoppe (12).

A memorial service was held at First Christian Church in Fallbrook on Sunday, October 1, following the worship service.
