Delaney selected for citizens academy

SAN DIEGO — Fallbrook resident Eileen Delaney is one of 75 people selected by San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis’ office to participate in the first ever District Attorney and Sheriff’s Department Citizens Academy.

This 10-week academy will include classes on many subjects of the criminal justice system. It will also include a diverse group of speakers from the District Attorney’s office, Medical Examiner’s office, CSI, judiciary, law enforcement, defense bar and media. Participants will learn about how the real crime lab works and current technology, the role of the medical examiner and placement and monitoring of high-risk sex offenders.

Other subjects that will be covered will be how crimes and cold cases are investigated and solved, and the challenges of how crimes are prosecuted, as well as economic and computer crimes and the role of many law enforcement agencies. Deputy district attorneys will also speak on family protection, gangs, narcotics and the “Three Strikes” law.

Academy members will take field trips to law enforcement facilities, participate in sheriff’s training facilities to learn about potential responses of tasers, pepper spray and the use of dogs, as well as take part in simulated threats where participants will have to make decisions about the level of force necessary in response.

Participants will also tour the county jail. The tour will begin just as it does for an arrestee in the booking process and continue through the court holding and trial. Participants will also look into actual cases and participate in a mock criminal trial.

Persons attending the academy will have unprecedented access to District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and many division chiefs, as well as CSI Lab Director Greg Thompson, Dr. Glenn Wagner, the San Diego County Medical Examiner and those in other divisions of the law enforcement and the judicial system.

Delaney is well known for her community service and support of many local organizations. Her community involvement includes serving as a member of the Fallbrook Planning Group, Founder of Operation United Families (which benefits military families), director of the Fallbrook Healthcare Foundation and a member of Soroptimist International. She is also a past director of the Boys & Girls Club, Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce, Village Association, Art & Cultural Center and the Bonsall Woman’s Club.
