What can I say?

The intention of my letter in the September 7 Village News was to: 1) show that in the battles against despots in the past 100 years, George Bush has done better at conserving lives than his predecessors, mostly Democrats (Note to Joseph Crews — my figure for the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts was 3,000 — a zero was lost in publication) and 2) to emphasize the fact that whining over the past (which cannot be changed) is borderline stupidity. Even those who were not in favor of invading Iraq (which includes me) should now be focusing all their energy on promoting actions which will produce the best outcome. It should be obvious that a premature withdrawal cannot be the best solution.

The letter by Robert F. Green (9/28/06) is humorous. I wonder how he is so smart to know that the Republican Party is taken over by corporate interests and that “the bloodshed by George Bush was for oil and Zionist dominance in the area.” I suppose the answer is as my mother-in-law used to say: “Why, everybody knows that.”

The clock can never be turned back to grant us an opportunity to make a different choice to see which course of action would produce the best end result. With today’s perspective it is reasonable to believe that the Iraq conflict will have a favorable result “IF” Iraq becomes a democratic country. Some will say that is not possible, but since we cannot go back, we should all be doing our utmost to make it happen — not undermining efforts to do so.
