Granddaughter of Fallbrook residents finalist for Samsung Scholarship

Ashley Holtz, granddaughter of Fallbrook residents Joan and Pete Krupczak, was named a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist by the staff of California Girls State in a decision made July 2 at Fresno State University. Ashley was chosen based on academics, school and community involvement and financial need. Ashley will join 99 other finalists (a total of two from each of the United States) who will compete for one of nine scholarships. Each scholarship is worth an expected $20,000.

Ashley’s grandfather, Pete, served with the United States Army during the Korean War, which qualified Ashley to participate in the competition. The Samsung American Legion Scholarship funds come from the earnings of a $5 million endowment given by Samsung.

In recognition of the United States Armed Forces who served during the Korean War to maintain the security of the Korean Peninsula, Samsung united with the American Legion to offer an educational opportunity to the descendants of wartime veterans who served honorably and to recognize the sacrifices and commitment of US servicemen and women.

Ashley is a resident of Acton, CA, where she lives with her parents. She is a violinist and volunteers with Acton-Agua Dulce Arts Council music program in which she teaches beginning and advanced strings. Ashley is a senior at Paraclete High School and is ranked first in her class. She is also a national Merit Scholar. She would like to engage in international business and one day open her own law firm. Her choices for further education include Stanford, Yale, UCLA, USC or Santa Clara University.

Ashley’s grandparents were on hand for the closing ceremony at Girls’ State when Ashley was named a finalist.
