Learn about Palomar Observatory

On Thursday, November 9, at 7 p.m. at the Fallbrook Gem and Mineral Society Museum, Scott Kardel will deliver an informative and inspiring talk with amazing images and information on the latest discoveries made at the Palomar Observatory. Scott will explain the techniques used to bring these images down to earth, so to speak. Attendees will see images of new dwarf planets in the solar system and he will explain how the astronomers of Palomar hope to soon outperform the Hubble Space Telescope without having to put the famous observatory into orbit!

Scott is the observatory’s first full-time person dedicated to education and public outreach. He was an active amateur astronomer as a teen and studied the sciences in college. After nine years as a high school science teacher, he finished his Master’s Degree in astronomy from the University of Arizona. He served ten years as the assistant director of the Lake Afton Public Observatory in Wichita, KS, before embarking on his present endeavors in 2003 with Caltech’s Palomar Observatory, where he is currently educating the public about the studies undertaken by the Palomar astronomers, curbing the growing problem of light pollution and creating a vigorous public outreach program.
