Board change needed

Beginning in 1992, I regularly attended the Fallbrook Union High School District board meetings for more than 10 years. Initially, the meetings were very informative as the board fully discussed matters concerning the district. This is no longer the case.

Board members were allowed an “opening statement” where a member might request a topic be placed on a future agenda or make a statement, positive or negative, concerning the district. This opportunity to inform the public is gone. It was deleted from the agenda. Discussion of agenda items by this board, as well, is less than previous boards, creating an appearance of rushing to adjournment. Further, this board is unresponsive to concerns voiced by the public. I understand that “one to one” discussions should not be allowed at board meetings, but that certainly does not disallow a courteous thank you or some indication of follow-up regarding the concern, particularly when parents are involved. They deserve a response.

Add to this lack of communications the reduction of WASC accreditation, declining test scores and poor performance on the California High School Exit Exam, it is clear that a change is needed. Candidates Steffler, O’Connor and Shulte can make that change and return the district to the respect it once had.
