Girls cross-country earns six medals at Dana Hills Invitational

Fallbrook High School’s girls cross-country team earned six medals for runners among the top 50 finishers in their grades at the Dana Hills Invitational held September 30.

Two of the Warrior runners were among the top ten in their grades, and four were in the top 15. “We were not strong enough to compete in any particular age group, but if you combine all the results we were one of the top teams,” said Fallbrook coach Troy Hamlin. “It was a pretty tremendous showing, quite honestly.”

The races in the Dana Hills Invitational were by grade, and while Briana Lopez was 11th among juniors she led Fallbrook’s runners with a time of 18:46 on the three-mile course. Fallbrook had two runners who completed the course in under 19 minutes; Noelle Garcia was seventh among sophomores with a time of 18:49.

Three other runners finished under 19:30 and all were among the top 20 in their class. Amy Hansen’s time of 19:09 placed her tenth among seniors, Leslie Grahtham ran the course in 19:10 to finish 19th among juniors, and Alex Nygren finished at 19:29 which made her the 14th senior across the finish line.

In meets with team scores the positions of top five runners from each team are used to determine a team’s points. Coaches hope for a close pack between their top five runners, and while Fallbrook’s top runners competed in three different races the 43-second difference between the first and fifth Warrior runners pleased Hamlin.

“That is outstanding given the fact that we were not all in the same race,” Hamlin said. “This is a team that continues to impress me.”

Fallbrook’s sixth medalist was Cassie Mulkey, who had a time of 20:32 to place 47th among juniors.

“I see this team as coming together,” Hamlin said.
