Wheeler wins scholarship

PORTLAND, OR — Fallbrook resident Sarah Wheeler, a student at the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling in Portland, OR, has received a scholarship from the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation. Established in 1995, the scholarship fund honors students whose outstanding academic achievements are complemented by qualities of leadership, dedication, integrity, compassion, sensitivity and self-discipline. Recipients are selected based on academic achievements, faculty recommendations, financial need and personal character.

Wheeler, who will be receiving a Master of Arts in teaching next year, credits the many children she has worked with as being a significant influence on her views of life. Since earning her degree in comparative religion from the University of Washington, Wheeler has worked with children in a number of different settings. She worked in a group home for girls in California and provided residential treatment counseling in Seattle and Portland for children with psychological, emotional or behavioral disorders. She also traveled, studied and worked with children in South America. After completing her MAT program, Wheeler plans to teach middle school language arts, earn ESOL certification and work with immigrant populations.
