Warrior golfers earn first league win

Fallbrook High School’s girls golf team obtained its first Avocado League win of the season October 12 with a 260-266 victory over El Camino at the Oceanside Golf Club course.

The match opened the second round of league competition for the Warriors, who had lost their first five conference matchups. The win gave Fallbrook a 3-9 overall record along with the 1-5 league mark.

“That was a good win for our girls to come back,” said Fallbrook coach Dave Heid.

Fallbrook had opened its season with a single-stroke loss to El Camino September 26 at Pala Mesa.

The October 12 match was originally scheduled to be played at the Arrow Wood Golf Club, but that course was not available the day of the match and the competition was switched to the Oceanside Golf Club, which is also the home course of Oceanside High School. Fallbrook had played on that course against Oceanside three days earlier in a loss to the Pirates.

“I don’t think it hurt us,” Heid said with his players having recently played the visiting course. “Most of the kids played better the second day.”

In actuality Fallbrook’s two leading scorers had nine-hole scores above their earlier totals. Nikki Kohls shot a 40 against Oceanside and a 43 against El Camino while Jackie Kohls had a score of 42 against the Pirates and 44 against the Wildcats.

“The better you are the harder it is to show improvement,” Heid said. “If they’re playing under 45 now, they’re playing well.”

Tarynn Shada had a score of 51 against El Camino. Melissa Grajek required 59 strokes and Samantha Everson took 63 shots.

Six golfers participate in a match and the top five are scored. Hailie Hauser shot a 68 during the match.

Fallbrook only has seven golfers, and freshman Morgan Perrault took a round even though her score would not be counted. Perrault, who was designated as the non-participant due to having the high score against Oceanside, responded with a 56-stroke round. “She was excited. I was, too,” Heid said.
