Veteran's Day to be observed November 11

Fallbrook residents will be afforded the opportunity to recognize Veteran’s Day on November 11 by enjoying a parade beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Fallbrook and Main and proceeding to the Village Square at Alvarado and Main. Grand Marshal of the parade will be Harriett Holmes, a Veteran of WWII who was stationed at Pearl Harbor as a Navy nurse. The very first Miss Fallbrook, Mary Rice (1937), will be in the parade also.

An observance ceremony will take place at the Village Square at 11 a.m. The VFW Color Guard will lead, followed by the five service flags carried by members of their respective service, followed by Camp Pendleton Marines of the 9th Communication Battalion carrying 24 Massed National Flags.

The Master of Ceremonies will be VFW Post 1924 Commander Mitch Chandler. Chandler is a Vietnam War veteran whose medical corps actions saved lives of friendly forces in Vietnam. After five years of distinguished service by Commander Frank Adams (2001-2006), Chandler was elected by post members to be the commander effective July 1. Under his leadership, many improvement projects begun by Commander Adams have reached completion. Chandler is the chairman of this year’s Veteran’s Day planning committee.

Comments will also be made at the ceremony by Colonel Bob Krone, USAF (Ret.) and focus on “Why We Are Here” in Fallbrook for Veteran’s Day. Patriotic music is being organized by Phyllis Bush of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary. Parking will be available behind the Art and Cultural Center.

A lunch (open to the public) will follow at approximately 12:15 p.m. at the Fallbrook VFW Post, 1175 Old Stage Road.
