Warrior boys win division at Southern California Invite - Four runners earn wins, six PRs

Fallbrook High School’s boys cross-country team won the large school division at the Southern California Invitational meet October 14 at Guajome Park.

“We were real pleased with that and had some great performances,” said Fallbrook coach Marty Hauck.

Four Warrior runners won their divisions at the meet, and six of the seven varsity runners set personal records on the 3.17-mile course.

“Went extremely well,” Hauck said. “We came away feeling really, really pleased with ourselves.”

The Southern California Invitational meet adds the times of a team’s seven runners to determine team positions. The races feature runners of specific team ranks competing against each other.

Approximately half an inch of rain the night before the race made Guajome Park’s clay course a muddy one, and there was also rainfall during the event. “Most of them ran personal records out there anyway,” Hauck said. “Actually really happy with that.”

Although Fallbrook junior Bret Hasvold’s time of 16:13 placed third among the #1 runners from the 30 schools, behind the 15:40 of Westview’s Travis Kohlman and the 16:02 by Valley Center’s Alex Avilez, Hasvold set a personal record.

Fallbrook senior Vinny Granata won the #2 race with a time of 16:36, which was a personal record. Fallbrook junior Todd Van Duzer was the top #3 runner with a personal-record time of 16:37.

The third varsity runner to win his race was junior Josh Smith, who competed as Fallbrook’s #6 runner and posted a time of 17:16. That was not a personal record for Smith on the course, but it was faster than the all but three of the Fallbrook runners.

Junior Kevin Strickfaden was third in the #5 race with a time of 17:28 and senior Tim Eves was fourth in the #4 race with a time of 17:41. Both were personal records, as was the 17:57 of junior Sam Liner which was good for third place in the #7 race.

“Six of the seven, even with the bad conditions, ran personal records, so we feel that they’re getting in shape at just the right time of the season,” Hauck said.

Forrest Whitfield missed the Southern California Invitational due to the Scholastic Aptitude Test he took that day.

The fourth Fallbrook runner to win his division was sophomore Uriel Aguirre, who won the junior varsity race with a time of 17:43. The junior varsity race also saw junior Sean Wood finish at 18:18, senior Darren Hansen cross the finish line with a time of 18:35, sophomore Will Shada complete the course in 19:24, junior Joey Prentiss cover the distance in 19:27, and freshman Richard Wojan post a time of 19:58.

“Tremendous day,” Hauck said.
