Best public education in Fallbrook

It’s a familiar mantra: education is the most important responsibility of society. For all of the political wrangling over the importance of education in our society and in our community, you wouldn’t know it by what’s going on in Fallbrook. The New School, one of the highest performing schools in North County and one of the highest in the state, has been facing repeated attempts to close it down.

The reasons being given keep shifting. First it was the modular, which was placed legally and with all of the proper protocol. Then it was zoning on a parcel that has housed schools of various sizes for the last eight years without incident.

As a parent of children attending this innovative, high performing school and as a member of this community, I would like to know why. Where are our elected officials? Where are the public school administrators who claim to be passionate about educating our children? In a town where three schools are in the “needs improvement” category, where are the teachers looking for ideas on how to better their own schools based on the outstanding example being set right here on our very own Main Avenue?

I guess excellence in public education is threatening to some. I guess the best interests of our children takes a backseat to the best interests of some people’s reputations.
