Senior Center sponsors Avocado Cribbage Tournament

It was another great day in Fallbrook, the Avocado Capital of the World, when 60 cribbage players gathered for a day of cribbage. The Fallbrook Senior Center was the main sponsor of the Fallbrook Avocado Cribbage Tournament for the sixth year. Co- sponsors included Calavo Growers, Del Rey Packing House and the California Avocado Commission.

On October 14, all players took home delicious avocados. Locally grown Lamb, Hass and Reed avocados were donated by Calavo and Del Rey. All players took home at least five avocados, with all qualifiers and the top three winners in the Time Passer toting home additional avocados. In addition, the California Avocado Commission furnished an avocado scooper/slicer, recipe book and refrigerator magnet for each player.

Cy Madrone of Ventura won the main event, defeating Rodney Rideau of Long Beach. Richard Smeltz from Colorado and Pam Pomeroy of Norwalk finished 3-4. Pam was the high qualifier in the morning round. Local players who qualified were Clay Judd and Ed Wozniak of Fallbrook and Jean Cunningham from Oceanside.

Again, director Obie Weeks came up with unusual trophies for the first and second place winners. The first place trophy was a whole avocado carved out of avocardo wood by local artisan Bob Jordan. The second place trophy was a hand-carved half avocado.

Colin Pratt of Hemet, playing in his first ACC event, won the 28 player Time Passer, with Julian Pomerleau of Anaheim taking second place.

Helping Obie with the tournament were Mike Duffy, Barb Sacic, Clay Judd, Virginia Ballard, Ron and Gigi Bragger, Luella Brotherton and Peg Palm. Ed Wozniak prepared the delicious lunch that was furnished for the players.
