La Paloma is where the wild things are!

Cockroaches! Eating bugs! What a “wild” week at La Paloma! Students kicked off the chilly week after our Thanksgiving break with a visit by the San Diego Zoo’s Dr. Zoolittle and his animal friends. The presentation helped students learn more about animal migration habits. During the presentation, several students had a “creepy” encounter when live cockroaches crawled on their bodies. Several brave volunteers, including students and teachers, showed why they should be the next contestants on “Fear Factor” by eating live beetle larvae. A special thank you goes out to the Chevron Corporation for sponsoring the assembly.

The school also kicked off the annual canned food drive this week, which runs through December 13. If students reach their goal of collecting 2,000 cans, the principal and assistant principal have to put their faces in a bowl of live worms! To top that off, if students collect 2,500 cans teacher Jana Scott will shave her head in front of the whole school! (These events are scheduled for December 15.) Talk about an incentive to collect those canned goods!

Attention, community members! If anyone would like to help the students reach their goal, nonperishable food items can be dropped off during school hours in the front office.
