Five Warrior spikers earn all-league honors

Five members of Fallbrook High School’s girls volleyball team earned all-league honors for the 2006 season.

Senior Carli Lloyd and junior Shelly Morton earned first-team all-league honors, senior Hannah Haskell and sophomore Sha’dere McNeal were given second-team all-league recognition, and senior Chelsea Ciaverelli was an honorable mention all-league selection.

“Kind of a nice way to finish the season with that many girls getting recognized for a job well done,” said Fallbrook coach Galen Tomlinson.

The all-league selections were determined by a vote of the league’s coaches. “I don’t think we got shafted, and I don’t think anybody else did, either,” Tomlinson said.

The all-league players were not selected to specific positions. Tomlinson often utilized his players’ versatility and put his stars at multiple positions during the season.

Lloyd, who has signed a letter of intent to play college volleyball at Cal, is primarily a setter. She also earned the league’s Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season. “Nice way to finish her high school career,” Tomlinson said.

Morton was a second-team all-league selection in 2005. She considers herself primarily an outside hitter. “She can set, she can play defense, she can block, she can hit from the right side just as well as the left,” Tomlinson said.

Haskell, an outside hitter who is expected to be on the Point Loma Nazarene University volleyball team in 2007, was a third-team selection last year. “There were some talented kids in our league this year. A lot of other years she probably would have been a first-teamer,” Tomlinson said.

McNeal was a middle blocker on Fallbrook’s freshman team in 2005 and was primarily a left-side hitter this year. “She’s a joy to have,” Tomlinson said. “She’s very coachable, eager to learn.”

Tomlinson predicts significant improvement for McNeal in subsequent years. “Her senior year she’s going to be a handful for the teams around here to handle. She’s pretty impressive,” Tomlinson said.

Ciaverelli was a middle blocker. “She’s a joy to have, and I’m going to miss her,” Tomlinson said. “Her work ethic set examples for the young kids.”

Tomlinson noted that all of his seniors provided positive examples for the younger players. “When the senior class has that kind of attitude they can pass it on,” he said. “It just bodes well for next year.”
