Leo A. Sachs

Leo A. Sachs, 81 (two weeks shy of his 82nd birthday), of Vista, CA, passed away on December 1, 2006. He leaves his loving wife of nearly 55 years, Helen; his daughters Hilary Sachs (Matt Kunkin) of Silver Spring, MD, and Merry Shugart (Matthew Shugart) of Bonsall; two adoring grandsons, Jordan Stratford and Emil Kunkin; a brother, Julian, of Avon, CT; and nieces, nephews and many friends all over the country.

Leo was born in Danbury, CT, and served in the Army Air Forces during WWII. He graduated from Yale University and spent most of his career in sales promotion and advertising in Wilkes-Barre, PA; Syracuse, NY; and Detroit, MI, before he and Helen moved out to California in 1978.

Together they started L and H Books, a bookstore in San Marcos. Afterward, Leo worked for several local newspapers, including the Village News and the San Marcos Courier. Leo is best known for his wonderful and corny sense of humor. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word (and a joke) for everyone. He loved tinkering and building (he always had a project in the works); he enjoyed watching the Padres (and often lost bets on them to grandson Emil), spending time with his family and his most recent passion, sending e-mail to all of his friends.

Services were held on Monday, December 4, at 11 a.m. at Temple Adat Shalom in Poway.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Leo’s memory to the American Heart Association.
