Winter shelter needs help

The Bread of Life Rescue Mission in Oceanside needs help in funding its winter shelter. Money is needed for rent, supplies and insurance, among other necessities. Many homeless people have few options when it comes to shelter during the freezing cold nights that North County has been having, especially since there are not very many shelters in this area.

Bread of Life opened its shelter on December 1 and will operate it seven nights a week until April 15. Last year it provided shelter for over 5,000 guests while providing hot meals. Volunteers are needed once again to prepare and serve meals as well as to provide smiles and words of encouragement.

The shelter also needs floor mats for guests to sleep on; new or gently used blankets; and hygiene items such as deodorant, lip balm, razors, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, all of which can be travel- or hotel-sized. Additional items needed are feminine products, socks, underwear for males and females, new or gently used t-shirts, jeans and shoes.

For a longer list of needed items, to make donations or to get more information, please contact Pastor Steve or Raylene Bassett at (760) 431-7965.
